White City Girl to Receive Wish for Shopping SpreeMedford, Ore. –– The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Oregon will grant 13-year-old Rubicela’s wish for a shopping spree on Sunday, January 21, 2007, at Rogue Valley Mall. This White City teen, who prefers to be called Rubi, is qualified to receive a wish from the Foundation because she has aplastic astrocytoma, a type of brain tumor. The fun-filled day will start at 11:30 a.m., when a surprise limo will pick up Rubi and her family at their White City home to escort her throughout the wish. Rubi’s first stop is lunch at her favorite restaurant, El Arriero, in Medford, where she’ll be greeted by Make-A-Wish volunteers to help celebrate her special day. At 1 p.m., Rubi will travel to Rogue Valley Mall, where she will shop at stores like JC Penney, Macy’s, Footlocker, Champ Sports, Finish Line and DEB. At 5 p.m., with shopping bags in tow, this teen will be picked up by her limo and escorted home to enjoy her new purchases. Rubi is bi-lingual (Spanish and English), and enjoys watching movies, playing on the computer and listening to Spanish music. She chose this wish because she wants to buy new school clothes and, like most teens, enjoys shopping at the mall. The Make-A-Wish Foundation pays for the shopping spree, and uses a formula based on the recipient’s age to calculate how much a wish child has to spend. However, the Foundation is receiving a little help from some of the mall stores to make the wish extra magical for Rubi: JC Penney is setting up a special sign welcoming Rubi and presenting a gift bag to her; Macy’s will have an employee on hand to make sure she has a personal shopping experience; Finishline is also presenting something special to Rubi to commemorate her wish. In addition, A Taste of Honey Limousine Service in Central Point is significantly discounting their limo price for Rubi’s wish-come-true. The Make-A-Wish Foundation® grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Born in 1980 when a group of caring individuals helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 69 chapters in the U.S. and its territories. With the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants more than 12,500 wishes a year and has granted more than 141,000 wishes in the U.S. since inception. The local chapter serves children, ages 2 ½ through 17, just like Rubi, living throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington.
