Giving Comes in a Variety of Packages this Holiday Season

Portland, Ore. –– As the holiday season approaches and the year comes to a close, monetary donations are not the only way you can donate to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Oregon.  Unique giving opportunities come in a variety of packages, including donations of frequent flier miles and unwanted vehicles.  The gift of non-monetary resources helps grant the wishes of local children with life-threatening medical conditions throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington.

“We are always grateful for any donations, especially those during the holiday season, that help alleviate direct cash costs for wishes,” says Andrew Asato, executive director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oregon.  “Alternative forms of giving, like airline miles and vehicle donations, are equally helpful to granting the wishes of local children.”

About 80 percent of wishes granted by the Oregon chapter include travel destinations via air.  Trips for local wish kids and their families would not be possible without donations of unused airline miles.  Most major airlines allow for their members to donate frequent flier miles to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, with Alaska Airlines giving 100 percent of miles donated directly to the Oregon chapter.

Another giving opportunity includes donating unwanted vehicles to benefit local wishes.  In cooperation with Speed’s Supertow, vehicles can be donated throughout the state of Oregon and Southwest Washington.  Donations of cars, trucks, boats, RVs, or other vehicles are tax-deductible based on the amount that the vehicle is sold for at auction by Speed’s Supertow.

Contributing frequent flier miles and vehicles to the Make-A-Wish Foundation are possible by visiting www.orwish.org and choosing the “Ways to Give” section, or by contacting the chapter office at 800-934-WISH.  Airline miles can also be donated directly through the particular airline’s mileage program.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.  Born in 1980 when a group of caring individuals helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 69 chapters in the U.S. and its territories.  With the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants more than 12,500 wishes a year and has granted more than 141,000 wishes in the U.S. since inception.

The local chapter serves children, ages 2 ½ through 17, living throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington.  For more information about the organization, please visit www.orwish.org or call the chapter office at 800-934-WISH to discover how you can share the power of a wish®.
