Playin’ Poker with a Pro

Ready to play cards with one of the greats, 19-year-old Spencer and his family flew to Los Angeles, California, for three extraordinary days courtesy of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Oregon with the help of the LA chapter.  Spencer’s wish was to meet and play poker with Annie Duke, known as the best female professional poker player.

On the first day of the trip, Spencer was treated to a special ride in a Rollz Royce Limousine, which took him to Chin Chin’s restaurant in Brentwood for the wish of a lifetime.  Overlooking the city, Spencer, along with his brother, mom and dad, shared dinner with Annie Duke.  The group also enjoyed playing several games of poker, where the professional gave the enthusiast some tips on how to play the game.  After spending two hours with the family, Annie was off to catch a flight, but not before signing the poker table top, two books, and two CDs for the wish recipient to take home to Portland.

“Meeting poker fans is always a great experience but meeting with Spencer and his family was extra special,” said Annie. “They are from my old neighborhood in Portland so I knew they were going to be amazing people as all people from Irvington are.  They did not disappoint and I think Spencer may have known more about the poker scene than I did.  He is an inspiring young man and I am better for having met him.”

Annie has been playing cards all of her life, but started trying her hand at tournaments in 1994 at the World Series of Poker, where she came in thirteenth. Soon after, she decided to move to Las Vegas and become a professional poker player.

Spencer has been a fan of Annie’s for several years as he developed a special interest in the game and started following the pros.  His trip to Southern California, the Universal Studios experience and the card games with Annie Duke created magical memories he and his family will not soon forget. Thanks to Annie, Spencer is already using new techniques for his poker game!
